When you begin from the notion that the Trump campaign was always full of shit about their implications of all that dirt in the Epstein files, it begins to make a lot more sense. Occam is still firmly in the camp that there is no there there in those files.
My best guess is that the government has little if any convictable dirt in the files.
But this has become a cultural shibboleth. Either you believe that Epstein is illuminati or you don't. A lot of people in Trump's base believe it. That in and of itself is a problem for him now... TBD if people will forget about it.
The Trump haters can't stop talking about how his base is totally fractured over this. I don't know how much of a point they have, but I do know that they think they can will a crisis into existence, if they just scream loudly enough that Trump is in crisis over this.
I will grant that Alex Jones, Tucker Carlson, and some other podcasters that helped get Trump elected, are deeply troubled by what they consider to be an obvious coverup. If they can grow their coalition, maybe someday we'll elect someone who'll fabricate whatever evidence their base wants to see.
